Wireless Broadband : December 2008

The first important point that I should make is that all broadband connections from all providers are capable of being wireless. All you need to do is purchase the correct hardware, configure it, and you're away. However, it can often be quite tricky to get it working properly, so the option of having the equipment supplied by your broadband provider can be particularly appealing as their tech support people should, at least in theory, give you all the help you need.

In today's market most companies offer a free wireless router of some description so that you can benefit from using your broadband throughout your house. Some companies offer their own branded ones, such as the BT home hub (left). Others supply a standard Netgear router which is more than adequate.

AOL

The wireless router supplied by AOL is a Netgear DG834G. AOL claim that it is worth £50 which is about right if you do a price comparison on Kelkoo.

BT

The BT Home Hub, if purchased separately, retails for £89.99 at BT shops. The BT Hub Phone, which is included free with broadband Option 3, retails for £79.99.

Eclipse

Eclipse offer a free wireless router only with their Home Pro plan which costs £29.95 a month.

BE Broadband

Be Broadband supply a Be Box modem which comes with a wireless interface.

Orange

Orange offer a Livebox which is a versitile wireless router. With this you can plug your regular phone line in so that you can make calls to UK landlines, Orange mobiles and 30 counties, all included in the price of the second line.

Tiscali

Tiscali offer a free wireless router with their broadband and broadband and phone deals.

Virgin Media

A wireless router is only offered on their large and extra large plans however one can be bought for £40 on their most affordable price plan.

Sky

A wireless router is offered with all of sky's broadband plans. This is a Netgear router.
